Guide to Request a New Work Permit

Description

This service can be used to request for a new work permit. A work permit is a government-issued permit that allows expatriates to work in the Maldives for a specified duration.

Eligibility

  • Work permits for domestic purposes: The applicant should be a Maldivian citizen.

  • Work permits for commercial purposes: The applicant should be a registered business (eg: sole proprietorships, companies, corporations etc) with existing quota.

  • The quota slot for the relevant occupation should have at least a validity period of 145 days.

  • The utilised quota pool should be linked to at least one active site.

  • The prospective work permit holder should be 18 years of age or older.

  • If applying for professional and managerial occupations:

    • MQA level 7 certificate in the relevant field OR;

    •  MQA level 5 certificate in the relevant field, with minimum 5 years' experience letters in the relevant field, AND MQA qualification recognition report is required

How to apply

  • You can apply using an Efaas account.

  • Logging into your own account will direct you to the oneGov homepage.

Documents required 

  • Passport bio data page

    • Should be a clear, colour scan with the Machine-Readable-Zone (MRZ) visible.

    • Should have a minimum validity of 12 months.

  • New passport page that contains the old passport number / old passport page

    • A clear, colour scan of the page where old passport number is stated OR;

    • A clear, colour scan of the old passport OR;  

    • Document issued by the respective countries’ immigration mentioning the old passport numbers.

  • Complete scanned copy of passport (optional)

    • This is an optional document, where you can upload the complete scanned copy of the passport, if you are unsure what page of the passport is the observation and alterations page on the passport.

  • Letter of appointment (including the fields specified on the template on the Xpat home page)

  • Maldives Immigration Visa Applicant Information Form IM30 form

  • Relevant educational certificates (required for professional occupations)

    • A minimum MQA level 7 qualification in a relevant field is required for professional occupations.

    • If the educational certificates are not in English, the certificates should be translated and attested by;

      • The institution from which they were issued OR;

      • A government authority, including high commissions and consulates OR;

      • An official translation service provider OR;

      • An institution that is recognized by the home country government as an institution which can provide official translation of such documents OR;

      • An internationally recognized translation service provider

  • Relevant registration certificates

    • If the prospective work permit holder’s occupation requires them to obtain a licence or registration, the licence or registration should be submitted with the application.

    • The licence or registration should be valid.

  • Employee’s medical report (prior to arrival - only required for domestic category)

    • Should be in English OR English translation with the official medical document

    • Should not exceed a validity period of 45 days from its date of issuance.

  • Employee’s police report (prior to arrival - only required for domestic category)

    • Should be in English OR English translation with the official medical document

    • Should not exceed a validity period of 6 months from its date of issuance.

  • Other requirements

    • You may be asked to supply extra documentation depending on your occupation. If these are required, they will be displayed when applying for a new work permit on the Xpat System.

After you apply

  • After successful submission a notification will be sent to your email and phone. 

  • You can check the status of the request from the history tab.

  • Should the status of your application be changed to “Incomplete”, you will receive a notification along with the remarks via email and phone.

  • Once the application is approved, it will be updated to “Pending Payment". When the deposit is paid, the Work Permit Entry Pass will be issued, and the status will be updated to "Issued (Pending Arrival)”.

  • Work Permit deposit is not required for government entities.

  • Business Visa and Special Visa application status will be updated to “Issued (Arrived)” once the application is approved and deposit is paid.

  • For work permits in pending arrival, once the employee enters the Maldives and the arrival information is updated by Maldives Immigration, the work permit status will be changed to “Issued (Arrived)”.

Service fee

  • Work permit deposit will be required to be paid and rates will be available from Xpat home page.

Payment notification

  • Once the application is at ‘pending payment’ status, you will receive a notification to pay the service fee via email and SMS.

  • You will receive the BandeyriPay link via email for making the online payment.

  • Choose the agency and the service for which you want to make a payment.

  • Fill in the reference number and other details before proceeding with the payment.

  • You will receive an SMS notification after your payment is processed.

Estimated time frame

  • All duly completed applications will be processed within 3 business days.

  • If any additional verification is required, the application may take longer than the standard time frame.

Guide to Change Employer

Description

This service can be used by individuals, businesses and other entities, to obtain a new work permit through changing the employer for an existing work permit holder.

Eligibility

  • The new employer should have an open quota slot for the occupation.

  • All the fees should be settled (visa fee and work permit fee) and current work permit should have a minimum validity of 08 days at the time of submission.

  • The quota slot that is being used to apply for the employer change request should have a minimum validity of 45 days.

  • The quota pool that is being used to apply for the employer change request should have at least 1 site in active state linked to the quota pool.

  • No objection letter

    • Must be issued and signed by the current employer (currently work permit issued employer).

    • Details of the former employer: name, ID card number, registration number, signature and company stamp (for companies) should be on the no objection letter.

    • Employee’s name and passport number should be on the no objection letter. Optionally, work permit number can be included as well.

    • Can be accepted if the no objection letter is open ended (no specific employer mentioned) or if the new employer is specified.

    • No objection letter should have been issued within the last 03 months. 

After you apply

  • After successful submission a notification will be sent to your email and phone. 

  • You can check the status of the request from the history tab.

  • Should the status of your application be changed to “Incomplete”, you will receive a notification along with the remarks via email and phone.

  • Once the application is approved the status will change to “Pending Payment”.  You may now proceed to make the payment.

  • Work Permit deposit is not required for government entities and the work permit status will be updated to ‘Issued Arrived’ once the application is approved.

  • Once the application is approved and the related payments have been cleared, the status of the application will change to “Approved” and a conditional work permit will be issued.

  • Work permit deposit will be required to be paid and rates will be available from Xpat home page

  • Once the application is at ‘pending payment’ status, you will receive a notification to pay the service fee via email and SMS.

Guide for Deposit Payment

Description

This service can be used by individuals and businesses to make deposit payments required prior to acquiring a work permit. This security deposit can be utilised by the government for various reasons mentioned in the Regulation on Expatriate Employment (2021/R-16).

Eligibility

  • If the New Work Permit request is in Pending Payment state, employers will be eligible to make the deposit payment.

  • If the employer is a government entity, the work permit deposit will not be required.

  • If deposit is required for employer change request, quota slot should have a minimum validity of 45 days.

  • If the deposit is required for an employer change request, the current Work Permit should have a minimum validity of one day from the deposit payment date in order to facilitate payment of the deposit for the new permit.

  • For employer change and regularisation work permit, deposit can only be paid within 30 days from the date the payment is updated to pending payment

  • For new work permit, deposit can only be paid within 90 days from the date the payment is updated to pending payment.

How to apply

  • You can apply using an Efaas account.

  • Logging into your own account and clicking the 'Start Now' will direct you forward.

  • Go to the respective deposit payment and choose the payment option.

    • Option 1: Pay online via BML gateway

    • Option 2: Pay with Xpat Digital Wallet

    • Option 3: Pay partially from Xpat Digital Wallet and reminder from BML gateway

Click pay and proceed with the payment option you have chosen

  • You can pay simultaneously for multiple Work Permit deposit payments through a payment collection

After you apply

  • After successful submission a notification will be sent to your email and phone. 

  • Once the deposit has been paid, the status of the work permit request will change to “Issued (Pending Arrival)” or “issued (arrived)”, based on the origin type of the work permit and the work permit entry pass or conditional work permit will be issued.
