This service can be used to get permits to conduct research on protected areas that come under the Environment Protection and Preservation Act (4/93).
Any individual or organisation seeking to conduct research related to protected areas can apply.

National ID card / Passport of the applicant, each team member, and the person serving as the focal point of the research. (Merged into one file.)
Business Visa or Work Visa for Foreign Nationals.
Registration Certificate (For organisations).
Letter of confirmation from private organisations or local councils supporting the study if applicable. (See FAQ below for more details.)
Letter of consultation from local councils or other organisations if applicable. (See FAQ below for more details.)

After successful submission, a notification will be sent to your email and phone.
You can check the status of the request from the history tab.
Once the application is approved, the status will change to “Approved”.
Should the status of your application be changed to “cancelled”, you will receive a notification along with the remarks via email.
Once the application is processed, the permit will be issued via email.
All duly completed applications will be processed within 14 days.

What information needs to be included in the Research Proposal?
The Research Proposal should contain all the necessary information pertaining to the research being proposed. The document should be structured to include the following information: (1) Clear and concise title for the research. (2) Introduction and background. (3) Research objectives (Breakdown of research activities included in the research). (4) Study site (site locations and tentative schedules) (5) Detailed methodology. (6) Environmental, scientific and social implications. (7) Research team members and designations. (8) References.
Who are remote research members?
They are the members of a proposed research who will not be coming to take part in the research activities on the field in the Maldives and will instead be working from abroad with the team here in Maldives.
Do Business Visas need to be submitted to team members working remotely from outside of the Maldives?
No. You do not need to submit visas for team members who will be working remotely from outside of the Maldives. However, if they join the research activities in the field, their Business Visa must be submitted ahead of time.
When do you require a letter of confirmation?
A letter of confirmation from the represented organisation is required when an applicant is applying for a permit on behalf of an organisation (NGO, University, Company, etc) and it is not possible to submit a registration certificate. It is also required if the research activity is being carried out on a private property. This letter is a letter of endorsement from said organisation.
What needs to be included in a letter of consultation?
A letter of consultation is a document that confirms that the council or relevant organisation has been informed about the proposed research project and must include the signature of the consulted party.
Which areas am I required to obtain permits for before conducting any research?
The research permit from EPA is only applicable for sites listed under any of the Protected Areas listed under the Protected Areas Regulation (Link), you must apply for a research permit from the EPA regardless of the species being studied, or other research parameters.
What needs to be included in the annual reports on research findings?
An annual report detailing the research findings, which must include the following: Introduction and objectives. Sites surveyed/studied. The timeline of the study. List of team members involved in the study, and in what capacity. Application of the methodologies . Results of the study. Discussion of the results, along with implications of the study. Limitations and way forward. Conclusion. Copy of any academic publications, reports, infographics, scientific posters, abstracts, news articles made in association to the study.
